Bert Mitchell Minority Management Organization Office Hours
Bert Mitchell Minority Management Organization strives to address the needs of minority students interested in various business disciplines. Since we are also striving to promote the development of skills and talents central to successful careers in the future. In order to fulfill this mission, it would make sense that we host office hours in order to assist our general body members in developing academic, social and networking skills. Our office hour services are available at all times for paid NABA members. However, general body members who have attended at least 3 general body meetings have access to our services only for a limited time. Non NABA members who have attended 3 general body meetings have access to 2 office hour services. In office hours, we will host a variety of services including:
I. Tutoring
Providing tutoring services to students when midterms and finals for SOM classes or SOM-related courses are approaching. We can recruit tutors from personal relationships with current and/or previous Teaching Assistants or through the EOP Tutorial Center. In order to attend these tutoring sessions, students must have attended at least three general body meetings. Vanessa and Henry should serve as the liaison between the executive board and tutoring sources. Tutoring services will be carried out by sending out a RSVP form the week of the exam. This will be done by including in the weekly e-mail the date & time & asking members to RSVP by emailing the Bert Mitchell e-mail account. Depending on how many people RSVP the tutoring session will take place either at the Tutorial Center or at a room previously booked by the secretary. If tutoring takes place in the Tutorial Center, the tutor will be getting paid by the EOP. However, if the tutoring occurs outside of the Tutorial Center then the tutor will not be getting paid, but will receive points towards the E-board Recognition Program. The time of the tutoring session should be determined based on the tutor’s availability, preferably the week of the exam, & if he/she is flexible with times, then it should be the time that students seeking tutoring are most available.
E-mail to be sent out to student body (Update Accordingly):
I hope the semester is treating you all well. As some of you may know Bert Mitchell Minority Management Organization (BMMMO) strives to help students develop their professional skills, as well as to facilitate opportunities & aid students in their SOM related courses. We strive to implement these opportunities through our office hour programs. One of the services we offer at office hours is tutoring services & review sessions for selected courses as exams for these courses approach. These tutoring and review sessions will be conducted by credited tutors who have taken these courses already and received satisfactory grades. With this being said BMMMO will be having a review session for Math 108 (Pre-Calculus) on Monday, Nov. 10, 2014. The review session will take place from 5:30pm-6:30pm. If you are interested in attending the review session, please RSVP by emailing bertmitchell@binghamtonsa.org by Friday, November 7, 2014. The room where the review session will take place will be announced later this week. We strongly encourage students to take advantage of these opportunities being offered, as they are beneficial to your academic and professional development. Please do not hesitate to email us at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.
II. Resume Assistance
Assisting students in creating and editing their resumes in order to more accurately reflect their potential, thus aiding them in their career and internship application process. We can have a resume expert come in from the Career Development Center, as well as executive board members who are qualified in resume assistance. Resume assistance should be available on an RSVP basis. Interested members should RSVP by e-mailing the Bert Mitchell e-mail account & specifing what time they would be available.
III. Mock interviews
Through Mock interviews we can provide students with the opportunity to become better prepared for their interview, more confident, and to overall improve their interviewing skills, an essential step for their future. We will allow the student to become more comfortable in an interview environment and to practice common interview questions. Mock interviews should be conducted during the first week of each month, preferably the day of the week where most e-board members are available. E-board members should follow a resume rubric in order to evaluate the member’s resume. Mock interviews should occur inside the office. Members should also RSVP two days before the event, in order to plan how many a-board members will be available & provide a specific appointment for each person.
IV. Internship/Career Assistance
With Internship and Career assistance we can provide the students with information and resources necessary for their careers. We will work with the Career Development Center to inform students of the possible internship and career opportunities that are available to them on campus. We can also work with advisors from the School of Management to assist students with choosing future career goals and majors. Bert Mitchell Minority Management Organization intends to facilitate these resources for students who may not be aware that they are out there. The education coordinator should provide internship & career opportunities to our members via e-mail. The education coordinator should also have a printed version of these opportunities posted on the cork board located inside the office. If a member requests one-on-one help (to ask questions or help with the application) then they should email the Bert Mitchell e-mail account and set up an appointment.
V. Assistance with SOM application
Providing counseling and assistance services to students who are currently enrolled in Harpur College and are interested in transferring to the School of Management. We will assist them with the application process as well as providing them with different career and academic opportunities that are provided within SOM. E-board members should be heavily promoting this service as the SOM IUT deadline approaches. Assistance would be provided to students who RSVP via email and set up an appointment. If a high amount of members are seeking this service, it is recommended to choose a date where everyone is most available & book the appointments for the same day. Very similar to when a professor has office hours.
VI. Assistance with choosing classes for future semesters
As a freshman or transfer student, it is always difficult to figure out what classes you should take, when you should take them, and who you should take them with,.Therefore, providing students with assistance with choosing classes would be beneficial with mapping out their current and future semesters and helping them take classes with professors that would be in their best interest. A week before registration for the following semester opens up, include in the weekly email that we will be offering this service for students who RSVP by emailing the Bert Mitchell account. Provide assistance to members by appointment.
VII. Assistance with finding and applying for scholarships
Since college is so expensive, financial assistance is every college students need. There is thousands of dollars of scholarship money that is out there that nobody applies for. By providing students with assistance in finding and applying for these scholarships, it would make the whole process easier for these students. It can also increase our NABA chapter membership since NABA provides majority of their scholarships to students that our potential general body members fit their guidelines. The educational coordinator should provide scholarship opportunities to members via email. There should also be a printed copy of the Scholarship guidelines & information posted on the corkboard located in the office. If a member seeks one-on-one assistance with an application, members can meet with an e-board member on an appointment basis.
